Wesley Harvey is showing his kissed again series of fine art china and paintings at Three Walls Gallery in the Blue Star Arts Complex during CAM. Moving from his previously labelled "cute" ceramics into newly controversial hard-core subject matter, the work is sure to ignite fires that burn as bright as the red wall the small paintings hang on.
The small-scale, salon-style-hangings of paintings feature leather-clad-biker-bois, cop-uniformed-openly-gay men, and other naked or half-dressed figures engaged in a variety of uncompromising homosexual acts. In an attempt to elevate homosexual pornography towards high-art status, Harvey has created exquisitely ornate china imbued with gold leaf butterflies and that same in-your-face sexual content as the small paintings. The art is heavily infused with detail and the subject matter is a bit kitschy, but overall the quality is extremely high. While the subject matter may not be for all, the work is finely crafted and this is why we can't seem to turn our eyes away, even if homo-eroticism isn't our cup of tea, the ornate-ness of it all is sure to impress even the most prude-at-heart.
