Laurie Brainerd feeds your senses at Jump Start!

Laurie Brainerd is showing her Food is Love, Love is Food work at Jump Start in the Blue Star Arts Complex.  The fabric work that Brainerd is showing deal with her own introspection about body-type and lifestyle/food associations.
For research and inspiration, the artist asked her husband to shoot hundreds of photos of her naked body.  In the process, Brainerd realized how her family, particularly her husband and mother, had used food as a form of affection.  With that realization came the understanding that food is indeed used to comfort, celebrate, nourish, heal, and soothe the human soul.  Brainerd's heavily graphic and text-laden work hammer this point home with creative urgency.  The mish-mash of colored paint stenciled over dyed fabric, mixed with the precision stitching tells the tale of her investigation aptly and if you happened to be there for the CAM Kickoff Party, you were indeed treated to award-winning music by Naser Musa (see video at right), as well as helpings of Twinkies, Ho-Hos, Fruit-Loops and other sweet treats that delight as much as the celebratory atmosphere of the Jump Start Art Gallery.
